Key Laboratory of Karst Environment and Geohazard Prevention,Ministry of Education was established and renamed in January 2003 on the basis of “Key Laboratory of Guizhou Provincial State Land Regulation and Remote-Sensing Application and by integrating the related disciplinary resources of Guizhou University and Institute of Geochemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, with Guizhou University as the dependency.
 
Having been evaluated by specialists in July 2005, the Laboratory was officially approved by the Ministry of Education to be the key laboratory under the Ministry of Education jointly sponsored by the provincial and ministrial authorities. It has been named “The Key Laboratory of Karst Environment and Geohazard Prevention, Ministry of Education (Guizhou University)”, hence becoming an important part of the National Scientific and Technological Innovation System. Now it is an important base to carry out basic and applied research on Karst environment and geohazard prevention, gather and foster high-quality innovation-type scientists and conduct academic exchanges.
 
“ Have the foothold in Guizhou, provide services to Southwest China and be geared to what is going on in the outside world”. Try to bring it into full play the regional advantages of Guizhou as it is located in the karst inland of Southwest China, closely integrate the geological-geochemical characteristics of karst regions of Guizhou Province and Southwest China, put the focus on the “solid-liquid-gas” material cycling and energy exchange in the karst regions, take it into consideration the requirements for the national and regional development strategies, aim at the international frontier subjects, carry out basic, strategical and far-sighted research in the following three key fields: karst environmental geology-geochemistry, engineering geology and mine disaster and territorial control , establish and perfect the technological and theoretical systems pertaining to karst environment and geohazard prevention, construct an innovation platform so as to combine production with education, raise the capability of policy-making and consultancy toward karst resources and environment issues, with an attempt to make great contributions to the regional economic construction and social development of Guizhou Province and Southwest China and make Key Laboratory of Karst Environment and Geohazard Prevention,Ministry of Education become an important, world known and far-reaching influencing base for fostering high-rank qualified personnel engaged in Karst environment and geological disaster prevention and control, scientific research and academic exchange.
